Eating Disorder Awareness and Prevention Events:

Healthy Within, Inc. frequently hosts eating disorder awareness and prevention events. To schedule an event in your community or school or to learn more about current events please contact Dr. Divya Kakaiya at 858-622-0221 or email Dr. Kakaiya at kakaiya@cox.net.

Eating disorders affect over 70 million people worldwide. More individuals die of eating disorders and substance abuse than any other psychiatric illness, making eating disorders the leading cause of death among young women (ANAD 2003). Dr. Kakaiya was recently awarded the 10 Leadership Award for her efforts in the treatment and prevention of eating disorders. Healthy Within Foundation is the only organization in this region exclusively dedicated to the prevention of eating disorders. The foundation is a treatment clinic which also conducts extensive outreach work in the community. Trained volunteers work with schools (middle school, high school and college), giving presentations which educate students on healthy living and empower them to resist the images in media which impact their body image.

Room With A View (originally performed at California State University, Northridge), is an art exhibit depicting the evolution of an eating disorder. For more information at this eating disorder awareness and prevention program contact Healthy Within at (858) 622-0221.

Eating Disorder Certification for Professionals:

International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals Certification Program (IAEDP): Promoting Quality Care through Education and Certification

IAEDP established the certification process to promote standards of excellence within the field of eating disorders. Professionals who demonstrate clinical expertise through education, experience and a rigorous examination are eligible for certification. Designation as a Certified Eating Disorders Associate (CEDA) in Mental Health or Nutrition or a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS) will enhance your marketability to managed care, the consumer and all other referral sources.

Individuals with the Certified Eating Disorders Associate (CEDA or CEDAN) in Mental Health or Nutrition or Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS or CEDSN) designations are health care professionals who have met rigorous educational requirements, have accumulated a minimum number of hours of qualifying work experience, have successfully passed a written examination covering the eating disorders field, have made a commitment to stay abreast of current developments in the field through Continuing Education, and have agreed to comply with the Association's Ethical Principles.

Eating disorders are complex, treatment-resistant diseases which can devastate the individual diagnosed with the eating disorder as well as impact the entire family system. The impact on the individuals and their families because of the severity of the diseases and the long term treatment required can result in the breakdown of the family, severe financial hardships, and even death. Eating disorders have become an epidemic throughout the United States and in many other countries.

IAEDP recognized the need for a systemic set of criterion that would measure baseline knowledge of mental health professionals treating these difficult diseases. By earning an IAEDP certification a professional demonstrates his or her knowledge of eating disorders treatment in a measurable, accountable manner. You may read more about the process of certification, the core curriculum courses, the supervision requirements, the testing, and recertification as well as many other aspects of certification by reviewing the Certification Manual. For more information regarding IAEDP Certification please visit www.iaedp.org or contact Bonnie Harken at (800)800-8126.
