Our mission is to promote healthy body images and prevent eating disorders through:
| EDUCATION | |
| AWARENESS | |
| ADVOCACY | |
| TRAINING. |
We will further our mission by:
| Educational presentations for parents, teachers, school counselors, physicians, health care providers and elementary, middle, high school and college students. | |
| Creating awareness in the general public about the factors that contribute to body image problems through using mediums such as the media, radio, TV and magazines. | |
| Conduct advocacy efforts to remove barriers to treatment, and work with families and school systems to remove triggers. | |
| Present interactive art exhibits and booths to combat negative body image messages. | |
| Provide treatment access to people who may not be able to afford care through scholarship programs. |
The Healthy Within Foundation is a young, ambitious non-profit foundation. We are a 501(c) Non-Profit Foundation (Tax ID# 74-3069281). The Foundation gave birth from the dire need that has emerged in the community to have more aggressive prevention programs. Since Healthy Within was not able to meet all the emerging prevention needs of our community, we created the Foundation to solicit donations so that we can have more extensive outreach efforts.
The Healthy Within Inc. Treatment Program has had a tremendous amount of success in the community in the last 7 years by conducting numerous prevention seminars at local high schools, middle schools and all the colleges here in San Diego. We have a traveling exhibit called "Room with a View" which has been very successful. It depicts the evolution of an eating disorder and makes a very dramatic impact on what the pressures are that make a person vulnerable to an eating disorder. Additionally, the staff at Healthy Within conducted over 100 presentations in the last one and a half years and we hope to continue to be even more ambitious in the future. Dr. Divya Kakaiya, the Founder of Healthy Within has presented numerous seminars to other psychologists, physicians and health care professionals both locally and nationally.
The Foundation has been set up to start more direct prevention services in the community such as the "Go Girls Program" created by NEDA and more aggressive prevention programs. We have been conducting a program called Girl Talk at local middle schools and have had over 230 girls successfully go through the program!!!
We have an ambitious goal of conducting additional education services to medical students, nurses, school counselors, life skills teachers and parents.
Donations to the Foundation are welcome and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Every penny you give goes directly to the prevention efforts. Currently we have no paid staff at the Foundations level and EVERYTHING is done by volunteers.
Volunteer with the Healthy Within Foundation!
Volunteers will help organize and run prevention events in the community, plus more!
Choose an area of expertise to be trained in: preschool/elementary, middle school, high school, college, parents and teachers, and/or athletes and eating disorders.
This is a wonderful opportunity to build your resume, make valuable connections in the field of psychology, design a dissertation, and meet a lot of wonderful people with the same passion and interest as you!
The Healthy Within Foundation is in dire need of people in the following specialty areas:
| Grant writing: Two slots open | |
| Fundraising: One slot open | |
| Journalism majors for writing briefs and press releases | |
| Business majors, especially in MBA programs to help us create a stronger infrastructure |
Requirements for Volunteers:
Need to watch 10 hours of video from previous trainings at Healthy Within and attend once a month meeting s that are 3 hours long. Once trained volunteers will need to donate approximately 20 hours per month towards major prevention projects organized by Dr. Divya Kakaiya at Healthy Within. If you are interested in volunteering, please fax a resume to 858-622-0201 and/or email Dr. Kakaiya at kakaiya@cox.net and let her know what draws you to the prevention work conducted at Healthy Within. If there are specific projects you "need" to work on for school, please let her know the time line required for those projects. We are not able to accomodate very short time line projects.
Dr. Kakaiya is also available as a consultant to research projects at the undergraduate and graduate level.
We are please to announce that The Healthy Within Foundation's founder, Dr. Divya Kakaiya, has been awarded the 10 Leadership Award which recognizes San Diegans who initiate solutions to the problems in our community. Dr. Kakaiya and the Healthy Within Foundation are recognized for the efforts in the treatment and prevention of eating disorders.
